Wine and Art after Dark : Nashville artist Dennis Greenwell hosted at the Model City Event Center
Join us for an evening of art and wine as we host the critically acclaimed Nashville artist Dennis Greenwell and his newest work “Tragic Disclosures” along with art from the local Fringe Art Group of Tricities.
“Witnessing the treatment of LGBT youth in our society has compelled me to create art to confront the situation,” Greenwell said. “For these young people living a life of genuine self should be a basic human right.” “Tragic Disclosures: Proclaiming Quotes of Desperation” incorporate powerful statements on mixed media paintings as well as installation, photographs and video work.
To combine the last written words of a teen who took their life with art representing their emotion puts into perspective the real humanity of the situation. It starts a conversation of how can we reach out and show compassion and love for these kids.
The gallery will open at 7pm with artist Dennis Greenwell opening his exhibit and he will be available for discussion. 20 various other artists will also be on hand with their works. Wine and Hors d’oeuvres will be provided. Open till 11pm. No charge to attend. Please RSVP to help us plan catering.

Regi Carpenter’s tales celebrate the glorious and gut-wrenching lives of four generations of Carpenters raised on the Saint Lawrence River. Tales of underwater tea parties, drowning lessons and drives to the dump give voice to multi-generations of family life in a small river town with an undercurrent. Carpenter is a recipient of the J.J. Reneaux Emerging Artist Award, a Leonard Bernstein Teaching Fellowship Award, and the Parent’s Choice Gold Award.

In this class we will slow down from ‘going at it’ with the paintbrush to ask ourselves the difference between an accurate painting from an inspiring work of art. The exercises are a combination of illustration ideas from the Savannah College of Art and Fine Art Studies from the Grand Central Atelier.
OBJECTIVE: We will examine compositional strategies used in illustration, landscape painting, figure painting, and abstract works of art. Students will keep a sketchbook with thumbnail examples of each of the traditional compositional devices, such as the golden ratio, s-curve, asymmetrical X, and rule of thirds. We will note how these strategies can be seen in both academic and contemporary works of art.
PROCESS: We will examine and sketch works of art old and new from a variety of styles to understand how different artists use these strategies to their benefit. Studies will include thumbnail (pencil/line), tonal value studies (charcoal) and color poster studies (can be done in oils, watercolor, pencil, or acrylics). This class is open to the community. KAG membership is not required

Peter Cook: Teller-In-Residence
Peter Cook is an internationally renowned deaf performing artist whose work incorporates American Sign Language, pantomime, storytelling, acting and movement. Cook has presented his work both nationally and internationally, including at the Kennedy Center, the National Book Festival and in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Japan. He has also appeared on PBS and traveled extensively with Flying Words Project to promote ASL literature. Cook teaches at Columbia College, where he received an Excellence in Teaching award. He calls Chicago home, where his favorite audience is still his son.

Born in a small English village where children were seen, but never heard, Jennifer learned the important arts of listening and watching. Her keen observations of life have translated into a repertoire of personal stories that resonate with the frailty and resilience of the human experience. Populated with memorable characters that spring vividly to life, her carefully crafted tales, delivered with a masterful sense of timing, take the listener on a roller coaster ride of emotions that elicit both laughter and tears. Her performance venues include the Alabama Tale Tellin’ Festival, the Nebraska Storytelling Festival, and the Illinois Storytelling Festival.

International Storytelling Center Presents Elizabeth Ellis: Teller-In-Residence
Designated an American Masterpiece Touring Artist by the NEA, Elizabeth Ellis grew up in the Appalachian Mountains hearing stories from her grandfather, a mountain minister. Ellis is a versatile, riveting teller of Appalachian and Texas tales and stories of heroic American women as well as poignant and hilarious personal stories, told Southern style. An award-winning author, she is a recipient of the John Henry Faulk award from the Tejas Storytelling Association, and the NSN ORACLE Circle of Excellence and Lifetime Achievement awards.

Come see Alton Chung: Teller-In-Residence at the International Storytelling Center
Alton Chung performs internationally, sharing stories and legends from Hawaii and spreading aloha. He tells stories from the Hawaiian Monarchy and the Plantation Days as well as Asian folktales from all around the Pacific Rim. He also shares stories of the Japanese American Experience of WWII. Chung has performed at the Congress of Asian Storytellers in Singapore, the International Gimistory Storytelling Festival in the Cayman Islands and the Bay Area Storytelling Festival, among others. He was awarded the first J.J. Reneaux Emerging Artist award by the National Storytelling Network.

Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton live at the International Storytelling Center
Although only in his twenties, Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton has earned a reputation for transporting audiences back to the 1920’s and making them wish they could stay there for good. An amazing multi-instrumentalist, his ability to transform traditional jazz, blues, folk, and country into the here and now – coupled with his humor and storytelling – makes for a uniquely engaging performance. Paxton was nominated this year for the International Folk Music Artist of the Year.
